TikTok Challenges Twitter with New Text Feature

LAHORE MIRROR — TikTok, the popular video-sharing app owned by a Chinese company, has recently introduced an exciting update. Users can now post text updates of up to 1,000 characters on the platform, adopting a microblogging approach reminiscent of Twitter’s style.

With this new feature, TikTok users can not only share text updates but also enrich them with sound and location markers, making their posts more interactive and engaging. The updated format allows other users to comment on and share these text-based updates, similar to how they would interact with photos or videos.

The move by TikTok comes in the wake of Meta’s Threads, a text-based companion for Instagram, which witnessed massive success, attracting over 100 million users within its first five days of launch. Interestingly, around the same time, Twitter’s owner, Elon Musk, announced plans to impose restrictions on the number of daily posts non-paying users could access, resulting in a reported 50% decline in daily user numbers since its implementation.

Over the years, social networking platforms have frequently emulated each other’s features to stay competitive in the market. For instance, Instagram launched Stories in 2017 to compete with Snapchat, and Twitter followed suit with its Fleets feature. Similarly, Instagram introduced Reels in 2020 to rival TikTok, and YouTube later unveiled its equivalent, Shorts, the following year.

It’s worth noting that various smaller applications, including Bluesky, Mastodon, and Truth Social by former US President Donald Trump, have also attempted, albeit unsuccessfully, to lure users away from Twitter.

As the social media landscape continues to evolve, platforms strive to innovate and adapt to meet users’ preferences and demands. With TikTok’s latest update, the platform is poised to leverage microblogging as a new means of keeping its audience engaged and entertained.
