LAHORE MIRROR — Outgoing Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has openly discussed his relationship with the establishment, stating that he has always acknowledged his connections and that they have consistently remained positive.

Speaking in Islamabad to reporters, Sharif addressed questions about his rapport with the establishment by saying, “When has my relationship with the establishment ever been strained?” He further clarified his stance on denying his affiliations with the establishment, asserting, “I have never denied my ties to the establishment.”

Regarding the selection of a caretaker Prime Minister, he mentioned that while his allies have given him the authority to make this important decision, there is a constitutional timeframe within which the appointment must be finalized.

On recent legal developments, PM Shehbaz shared his perspective that the annulment of the Review of Judgment Act would not significantly impact Nawaz Sharif’s situation. He explained that Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification had concluded after a five-year period and that there were no legal barriers preventing his return.

Shifting the focus to economic challenges, Shehbaz Sharif addressed the issue of inflation, attributing it to the policies of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He highlighted his administration’s efforts to mitigate the impact of the high inflation rate on the general public, resulting in a noticeable reduction.

Highlighting his governance approach and stance towards the media, the former premier emphasized that he has never reprimanded any journalist. He reaffirmed his commitment to constructive criticism and welcomed independent journalism, underscoring his belief in the vital role of journalism as a cornerstone of accountability.

On this occasion, the prime minister was asked why, apart from promoting investment in the country, he was giving credit to Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir for the success of the Bhara Kahu Bypass project.

In response, he said that the work on the Bhara Kahu project, a joint venture with the National Logistics Cell (NLC), had been slow so he asked the army chief to speed up the work. He said that the army chief ensured the timely completion of the project, due to which he gave credit to him.

The PM also remarked that his relations with the establishment had remained cordial, not only with the current establishment but also with every establishment and he was proud of that.
