LAHORE MIRROR — The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced to take action against its Senators who voted in favor of the recently-passed Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill.
It is pertinent to mention here that the bill proposes a punishment of up to five years’ imprisonment for individuals who disclose sensitive information related to the army or speak negatively about the armed forces.
Following a core committee meeting led by PTI chief Imran Khan, the PTI decided to initiate disciplinary measures against lawmakers found guilty of deviating from the party’s policy regarding the approval of the Army Act in the Senate. The party decided that a one-member commission, led by Senator Shibli Faraz, will immediately investigate the roles of PTI’s senators in the bill’s approval and provide recommendations to the party chairman.
Once the commission presents its recommendations, the PTI will take disciplinary action against those Senators found to have strayed from the party line. The PTI core committee meeting also discussed other topics such as the country’s current political situation, preparations for the next general elections, and the party’s political strategy.

The “Pakistan Army (Amendment) Act, 2023,” presented by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, specifies that anyone who discloses information against the country’s interests or the Pakistan Army will be subject to the Official Secrets Act and the Army Act. Those convicted of such offenses could face rigorous imprisonment for up to five years.
During the Senate session, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Mian Raza Rabbani staged a walkout in protest, labeling the approval of multiple bills in one day as “blind legislation.” Rabbani expressed concern that crucial bills were rushed through without proper consideration, describing it as a “dark day” for the legislative process.
