Chief justice urges ECP to conduct delimitations transparently

LAHORE MIRROR — Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial stressed the need for transparent delimitation of constituencies by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

He said while heading a two-member bench, which was hearing petitions challenging the delimitation of provincial constituencies PS 7, 8, and 9 Shikarpur, which had been contested in the apex court in 2018

During the proceedings, CJP Bandial highlighted that constituency delimitations were of significant public interest and had been a recurring topic in the highest court’s discussions. He underlined the importance of a transparent process and cautioned that even slight modifications made by the tapedar could impact candidates’ vote counts.

CJP Bandial also inquired about the schedule for the upcoming general elections. In response, Director General (Law) Muhammad Arshad indicated uncertainty regarding the election date. CJP Bandial stressed that it was crucial for the election commission to address all issues before the polls.

He further noted that the matter was particularly sensitive in Sindh, where grievances often arose regarding the accuracy of constituency delimitations in the province.

After hearing arguments, the Supreme Court referred the issue back to the Election Commission for resolution.
