LAHORE MIRROR — Another inflation bomb for people who are already paying record-high food and fuel prices, National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Wednesday approved Rs7.50 hike per unit in power tariff which will certainly take a heavy toll on the electricity bills.

The NEPRA has granted approval for the government’s proposal to raise the basic power tariff by up to Rs7.50 per unit, with the new tariff set to be effective from July 1. However, lifeline customers will be spared from the increase in electricity prices.

Following NEPRA’s decision, the regulatory body has forwarded the proposal to the federal government for notification. This move is expected to generate a substantial revenue of Rs600 billion for the government due to the tariff hike.

Under the new tariff structure, there will be an additional Rs6 per unit charge during peak hours. As a result, the average tariff has seen a significant increase from Rs22.59 to Rs29.36.

It is important to note that for customers consuming up to 300 units, the average tariff will now reach Rs50, including taxes. Similarly, for those utilizing up to 700 units, the tariff will exceed Rs60 when taxes and surcharges are factored in.

With the exemption for lifeline customers and the imposition of increased tariffs on other segments, the government aims to address revenue challenges in the power sector. However, concerns remain about the impact of higher tariffs on households and businesses.
