Normal Distribution of Abnormalities in Sustainable Societies: Chemistry and Genesis of Criminality, Deviance, Defiance and Creativity
Dr Shakir Ahmad Shahid
Criminogenesis is a process through which a biological person is mentally programmed over an extended period of time so that, consequently, he develops a propensity to commit a crime if an inductive situation is presented to him. It’s a dynamic process involving complex interplay of genetic, epigenetic, physical and virtual ecosystems. Criminals do not come into being overnight. They are fashioned through a gradual process involving many push and pull factors augmented by various positive and negative reinforcements.
Roots of a creative propensity also trace their origins to the circumstantial landscapes similar to the ones from where the roots of criminal propensity rose. Same is the situation with the origin of another set of parameters—deviance and defiance. Actually, given the innumerable permutations (arrangements) of the developmental matrix the rising of deviants is a normal phenomenon out-flowing from a normally functioning human cluster. In many situations the deviance acts as source of crime and creativity as per the dynamics of the overall housing socio-ecological complex (SEC).
Criminality, deviance, defiance and creativity (CDDC) are similar to each other in chemistry of their genesis. All of these are a kind of a phenomenon which is generally considered as abnormal. However, many times, this contextual tag of abnormality is relative to a particular time-space index. In some situations, this relative criterion stands true even for crime and criminality also, and with the change of time-space index the same kind of crime or criminality become a beacon of laudable defiance.
These phenomena, like criminality, deviance, defiance, and creativity, which are generally considered as abnormal, have also resulted in many astounding accomplishments of mankind in his civilization history. Thus, abnormality of any kind, being a part of a whole distributional spectrum, is actually a functional character. Hence, the production of CDDC quad, in a certain quantum below the threshold limit, is an indication of a normally functioning society or cluster.
The presence of the CDDC quad, again in a certain quantum, is also an indication that a particular societal cluster is diverse, and is equipped with resilience to respond to the changing circumstances. Now, if the presence of a CDDC quad, of a certain quantum, is an indication of a normal and resilient society, then, where lies the threshold value beyond which a cluster may be considered as abnormal? Practically, this threshold value varies from cluster to cluster, and from parameter to parameter in the quad under consideration.
In actuality, all earthly clusters are part of a socio-ecological complex, wherein, innumerable variables are in a dynamic interplay constantly. And the threshold line differentiating the normal quantum of any parameter like of criminality from its abnormal quantum is decided by the quantum of many other parameters like average quantum, creative quantum, deviant quantum, and so on. Actually, given the innumerable permutations of the developmental matrix, a whole range of groups, each having a distinct behavior is produced.
The abnormal quantum of these abnormalities—CDDC quad—is genuinely a matter of concern for sociologists, criminologists and the state, and should be addressed through interventions. Again, as the roots of CDDC quad are embedded in dynamic interplay of the whole SEC; hence only an inclusive solution strategy encompassing the whole socio-ecological complex would work. Any alteration with one or two variables of the SEC would yield nothing but a counter backlash.
Three simple conclusions which can be drawn from the aforementioned discussion are: 1. In many situations these tags of criminality, deviance, defiance and creativity are relative in the time space index. Hence, one should not be emotional and categorical while dealing with carriers of such tags. 2. No system can eliminate these abnormalities on 100% level, nor should any such system, which intends to achieve 100% elimination, be allowed to work. 3. Solution strategies for complex level abnormalities should always be sensitive to all components of a socio-ecological complex operating in a particular time-space.
“A societal cluster lacking intricacy in deviance is inevitably marred with lack of quality in its leadership.” (Dr Shakir)
