Heavy Floods Hit Balochistan and Punjab Due to Monsoon Rains

LAHORE MIRROR — Monsoon rains have caused a dire flood situation in the province of Balochistan, leading to the closure of the Bolan National Highway and isolating the region from other provinces.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported 10 tragic deaths, including two women and two children, in various rain-related incidents. Around 335 houses were inundated, with 112 completely destroyed and 232 partially damaged. Floods have wreaked havoc on infrastructure, disrupting electricity supply and communication.

The floods also affected the temporary river bank at Pinjra Bridge in Bolan, closing the national highway connecting Balochistan to Sindh and Punjab, leaving passengers stranded. Additionally, the Quetta-Karachi National Highway remains closed due to the non-construction of the Hub Bridge. The water level in Mirani Dam reached a critical point, necessitating water release through the spillway.

In India, the merging of floodwater from the Sutlej into the Indus River resulted in the issuance of the first high flood warning at Guddu and Sukkur barrages. The Sutlej River experienced an alarming surge in water flow, inundating villages and settlements, causing loss to livestock and crops.

To cope with the dire situation, villagers have constructed boats made from drums for migration to safer areas. The floodwater situation remains critical as more torrential rains are predicted in various parts of Balochistan and Punjab. The PDMA is on high alert to respond to any emergencies.

In other regions of Pakistan, including Punjab, the ongoing monsoon season continues to impact the area. The PDMA reports chances of stormy rains in various districts, causing rivers’ water levels to rise steadily. The Baloki area in the Ravi River is currently experiencing a low level of flood, with recorded inflow and outflow at Baluki Headwater. The situation is being closely monitored to ensure safety and minimize damage.
