GCU Wins USL Squash Championship
LAHORE- The Government College University Lahore won the Squash Championship of University Sports League (USL) 2020 held under the auspices of Higher Education Department (HED), while a private university, the University of Central Punjab (UCP) stood victorious in Tennis.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi chaired the prize distribution ceremony at the GCU Sports Complex, which was also attended by HED Additional Secretary Mr. Tariq Hameed Bhatti and Deputy Director Sports Ms. Shamsa Hashmi.
In Squash, GCU team was awarded Rs. 100,000/- for first position, while UCP and Punjab University students stood second and third. GCU beat UCP by 2-1 in finals.
In Tennis, UCP secured the first position, while LUMS and PU stood second and third.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi educated students that sportsmanship was important than winning an event. He called upon students to play for the glory of sports and of their alma mater.
He believed that USL would produce the champions for Olympics, besides improving coordination among public and private sector universities.
HED Additional Secretary Mr. Tariq Hameed Bhatti congratulated the winning teams, saying that USL had brought back the youth across Punjab to grounds, which was a milestone achievement of HED. He said that the winner of each game was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 100,000/- while Rs. 75,000/ and Rs. 50,000/- cash awards were given to the second and third position respectively.– PRESS RELEASE
