Karachi- An International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation has arrived in Pakistan for review talks regarding the disbursement of the fourth tranche of the $7 billion loan program.

In Karachi, the IMF delegation visited the State Bank, where meetings with officials are ongoing.

Sources say that State Bank experts will brief the IMF on economic performance. In the first phase, technical data sharing will take place with the IMF. During the talks, the IMF delegation will be informed about economic performance from July to January.

According to sources, in the data-sharing session, the IMF mission will discuss improvement in foreign exchange reserves with State Bank experts. Technical negotiations will also cover monetary policy, inflation, banking regulations, and other matters.

The IMF has set a target of increasing the State Bank’s foreign exchange reserves to $17.8 billion by June 30. State Bank experts will also brief the IMF on the policy rate, anti-terror financing, and anti-money laundering measures.

Sources say the IMF is forecasting the State Bank’s net foreign exchange reserves to remain at $23.3 billion in the next fiscal year. During the technical sessions, multiple targets for the first half (July to December) of the current fiscal year will be reviewed.

According to sources, the primary balance from July to December remained in a surplus of 4,105 billion rupees, while Pakistan’s current account deficit for the current fiscal year is estimated at negative 0.6 percent of GDP.

Sources say the IMF delegation will visit Pakistan from February 25 to March 11. The third economic review will be conducted under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) loan program between Pakistan and the IMF.

In addition, negotiations will be held for the second economic review under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) program related to climate change. If successful, approximately $200 million will be received under the RSF program.

Sources say Pakistan has achieved most of the IMF targets. Before the new fiscal year budget, Pakistan expects a staff-level agreement and the possibility of receiving $1.2 billion.
