London: The UK’s Medical Tribunal Service has declared Pakistani-origin consultant anaesthetist Dr. Sohail Anjum fit to work again and lifted the ban imposed on him.
According to the British newspaper The Guardian, Dr. Sohail Anjum was accused of leaving the operating theatre after sedating a patient in Tameside Hospital in 2023, and engaging in sexual activity with a nurse.
During this time, the responsibility of monitoring the patient was given to another nurse. Following the incident, he was dismissed from his job in February 2024.
In the medical tribunal, Dr. Sohail Anjum admitted his offence, saying it was a serious mistake and that he is ashamed of it. He said he would not repeat such behaviour and wants to restart his career in the UK.
In the decision, tribunal chairperson Rebecca Miller said that although the doctor prioritised his own interests over those of the patient and fellow staff, the likelihood of such a mistake happening again is now low.
The tribunal allowed him to work again, but the decision on whether or not to issue a warning on his registration will be made later.
