LAHORE MIRROR — The Punjab Assembly has passed a resolution calling for a ban on social media use by kids under the age of 16, citing concerns over their physical, mental and moral well-being.
The resolution, moved by government member Sarah Ahmed, stated that protecting children’s physical, mental and moral development was the responsibility of the state.
It further noted that inappropriate content available on social media was exposing children to psychological stress and other potential risks.
The resolution highlighted measures introduced in Australia, France, China and several US states to regulate or restrict social media use by minors. It stressed that effective legislation was also essential in Pakistan to safeguard the future of children.
The resolution called on the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to introduce an age-verification mechanism for social media platforms to ensure that children below the stipulated age are prevented from accessing such services.
