LAHORE MIRROR — Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani of the Lahore High Court has reportedly resigned from his position, with a copy of his resignation letter also emerging publicly.
Justice Kayani, who was recently transferred to the Rawalpindi Bench of the Lahore High Court, was due to retire on February 11, 2032. In his resignation letter, he cited personal reasons, health concerns and his conscience as the principal reasons behind his decision to step down.
Reflecting on his judicial career, Justice Kayani stated that he had decided more than 23,000 cases during his tenure. However, he expressed serious reservations about developments within the country’s judicial system, particularly constitutional amendments and their implications for judicial independence.
According to the resignation letter, the 26th and 27th Constitutional Amendments have significantly undermined the independence of the judiciary. He also raised concerns over alleged interference in the process of judicial appointments, describing such developments as detrimental to the judicial system.
Justice Kayani further maintained that these measures had severely damaged public confidence in the administration of justice, while increasing the difficulties faced by ordinary litigants. He expressed concern that people seeking justice were increasingly being overlooked under the prevailing circumstances.
Explaining his decision, Justice Kayani wrote that his conscience did not allow him to continue performing his duties as a judge under the existing conditions.
He also stated that he intended to return to legal practice, where he would work to protect the rights of the public and promote legal awareness.
