Canada has made prominent and significant changes in the study-permit policy for foreign students, from which 408,000 students can benefit.
According to the international news agency, Canada has announced the implementation of a new policy for study visas for the coming year 2026.
Under this policy, the total number of study permits will be reduced, which is part of the government’s plan to decrease the proportion of temporary residents in the country.
Canadian immigration officials said that under this policy they will welcome 408,000 foreign students, of which 155,000 will be new, while 253,000 will be existing or returning students.
This number is 7% less compared to 2025 and 16% less compared to 2024.
Canadian immigration officials further said that this reduction is part of efforts to keep the international student program balanced and aligned with national needs.
Foreign students who come to Canada for Masters or PhD will be given another major facility starting January 1, 2026.
Foreign students doing Masters and PhD in public educational institutions will be allowed to apply for a study permit without a PAL or TAL letter.
Approximately 49,000 students will directly benefit from this, with the aim of promoting the research sector and national innovation.
