LAHORE MIRROR – The United States has launched a new military task force aimed at disrupting Iran’s efforts to transport supplies through land routes and the Caspian Sea, as Washington intensifies its economic and military pressure on Tehran.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Saturday that Commander Admiral Brad Cooper ordered the establishment of Task Force Iron Gate on Friday. The new unit will focus on preventing the movement of weapons systems, dual-use technologies, sanctioned goods and illicit financial resources across Iran’s land borders and the Caspian Sea.
“The establishment of Task Force Iron Gate reinforces the success of our ironclad blockade against Iran at sea,” Cooper said. He added that closer cooperation between CENTCOM and US government agencies would further restrict Tehran’s ability to finance militant activities, rebuild weapons production facilities and replenish its military capabilities.
US Expands Pressure on Iran Following Military Conflict
The announcement comes amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran following the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which began on February 28. The offensive killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and targeted several military and nuclear facilities across the country.
Iran responded with attacks against Israel, US military installations and locations in neighboring countries. Tehran also restricted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important shipping route that previously handled approximately one-fifth of global oil supplies.
The waterway has since become a major source of regional tension, with attacks on commercial vessels prompting repeated US military responses.
According to CENTCOM, Task Force Iron Gate will complement Washington’s existing maritime blockade, which the command says has prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion worth of crude oil in recent months. The United States has also maintained strict enforcement measures targeting vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports.
Washington Expands Financial Sanctions Against Tehran
Alongside its military measures, Washington is intensifying efforts to disrupt Iran’s international financial networks.
On Friday, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against eight Canada-based money services businesses accused of helping Iran and organizations linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) evade American restrictions.
The Treasury said the companies facilitated the conversion of Iranian rials and other currencies into digital assets. The transactions allegedly involved sanctioned Iranian cryptocurrency exchanges and digital wallets associated with the IRGC.
The sanctions are part of Operation Economic Outcast, a US initiative launched in August to dismantle financial networks supporting the Iranian government and the IRGC.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amid Major Disagreements
The creation of Task Force Iron Gate coincides with renewed diplomatic efforts, mediated by Qatar, to bring an end to the conflict.
However, negotiations remain complicated by disagreements over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said Friday that Washington and Tehran had yet to reach a comprehensive agreement. He urged both sides to demonstrate flexibility and pursue a practical peace settlement rather than insist on a perfect deal.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence in the ongoing negotiations during remarks to reporters outside the White House on Friday, following the announcement of a new chief of staff.
“We have beaten Iran. We are doing very well with Iran. We are talking to Iran. We have not lost a soldier in seven months or six months,” Trump said.
The establishment of the new task force signals Washington’s intention to maintain pressure on Iran’s military supply chains and financial networks while diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict continue.
