LISBON: Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his decision to retire from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable career spanning more than two decades.
The 41-year-old forward revealed his decision in a social media post on Thursday, saying he would bring his international journey to a close after the November international break.
Ronaldo said the decision had not been easy, describing it as one that involved both his head and his heart.
“If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it,” he said.
The Portugal captain also expressed gratitude to his family, the Portuguese people, and the teammates, coaches and staff who had been part of his 23-year international career.
“Portugal will always be a part of me,” he wrote alongside an announcement video, adding that he would be handing back the iconic number seven shirt.
Ronaldo made his international debut in 2003 and went on to become one of the most decorated players in Portugal’s football history.
He captained the national side to its first major international trophy at Euro 2016 and later helped Portugal secure the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
During his international career, Ronaldo made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals for Portugal, setting all-time records for both international appearances and goals.
His retirement will mark the end of an extraordinary chapter in international football, with the forward leaving behind a legacy as one of the game’s most prolific goal scorers.
