ISLAMABAD: The federal government is considering introducing a minimum age requirement for social media users and tighter restrictions on obscene content shared online, according to a report published by ProPakistani on Thursday.
The report, citing sources, said the proposals were part of efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s legal and regulatory framework for social media amid concerns over child exploitation, obscene content and other online offences.
Under the proposals being considered, authorities may set a minimum age for access to social media platforms and introduce measures to restrict obscene material being circulated under the guise of vlogging and other digital activities.
The Ministry of Interior is expected to consult relevant stakeholders before finalising its recommendations, according to the report. The consultation is likely to involve federal and provincial authorities, law enforcement agencies and other institutions dealing with online safety.
Police departments from all four provinces have submitted reports to the Interior Ministry regarding cases involving child exploitation, obscenity and other crimes linked to social media, ProPakistani reported.
The reports will be examined as part of the process of determining possible legal and regulatory measures to address such offences and strengthen oversight of online platforms.
International models under review
According to the report, the government will also examine social media regulations adopted by other countries, including Australia and the United Kingdom.
Authorities are expected to review cases involving child exploitation and obscene online content reported in Pakistan to assess whether changes to existing laws and regulations are required.
The proposals remain under consideration and no final policy, minimum age or specific restrictions have been announced by the government at this stage.
The move comes amid growing international efforts to introduce stronger safeguards for children and regulate harmful online content.
