MULTAN: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday announced free travel on the province’s green electric buses for women, students, senior citizens and people with disabilities.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the electric bus service in Multan on Sept 17.
The service has initially been launched with 60 buses, while another 100 are expected to be added in the coming days.
The standard fare has been fixed at Rs20 per journey. However, passengers belonging to the four eligible categories will be able to travel free of charge. The facility applies to senior citizens aged 60 and above.
Speaking at the launch, Ms Nawaz said the provincial government planned to expand the electric bus network to other parts of Punjab as part of its efforts to improve public transport.
The government is targeting a fleet of 3,000 electric buses across the province by June 2027. Of these, 1,500 buses are planned for deployment in 91 tehsils from January next year, while another 1,100 buses have been ordered for smaller districts and regional headquarters.
The electric buses form part of the provincial government’s broader public transport programme, which seeks to provide affordable mobility while promoting cleaner modes of transportation.
With the launch in Multan, the electric bus network has expanded to another major city in Punjab, with the government planning further expansion in the coming months.
