LAHORE MIRROR — US President Donald Trump has approved the execution by firing squad of former Army Major Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people in a 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had recommended the firing-squad execution, which was approved by President Trump. The Army Secretary will determine the time and place of the execution.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, opened fire at the military base on November 5, 2009, killing 12 active-duty soldiers and a retired serviceman and wounding 32 others.
A military jury convicted Hasan in 2013 on 45 counts of premeditated murder and attempted murder and sentenced him to death. He has remained on military death row at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, while his case went through the appeals process.
If carried out, the execution would be the first by the US military since 1961 and the first US Army firing-squad execution since 1945.
