LAHORE– Punjab Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Local Government Raja Basharat on Monday said 798 prisoners involved in minor crimes have been released from different jails on the eve of Eid Al-Fitr.
He was addressing a ceremony as chief guest held in connection with release of prisoners at the Kot Lakhpat Jail.
Provincial Minister for Prisons Zawar Hussain Wariach, Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Taimur Ahmad Khan, Minister for Population Col (retired) Hashim Dogar, Minister for Labour Ansar Majeed Niazi, Minister for Social Welfare Ajmal Cheema, Inspector General Prisons and concerned officers were also present.
Raja Basharat said that the pardons to the prisoners were given as a gift from Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar so that they could celebrate holy Eid festival with their beloved ones.
He hoped the absolved prisoners would start a new life with new ambitions and free from crimes.
He informed the government had paid almost Rs230 million while the philanthropists contributed Rs40 million to pay fine and ransom for the poor prisoners.
Each freed prisoner was also presented with a gift of unstitched cloth piece for suit and Rs1,000 from the government.— PRESS HANDOUT
