LAHORE MIRROR — The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has released its latest annual inflation report, showing that the country’s inflation rate rose to 11.53% year-on-year, while weekly inflation increased by 0.21%.
According to the PBS, prices of 20 essential commodities increased during the week, while 10 items became cheaper and prices of 21 items remained unchanged.
Chicken prices rose by 7.25% during the week, followed by garlic at 1.85% and gram pulse (chana) at 1.30%. LPG prices increased by 1.17%, eggs by 0.72%, and rice by 0.55%.
On the other hand, diesel prices declined by 3.43%, while banana prices fell by 1.52% and sugar by 1.05%. Potato prices decreased by 0.96%, petrol by 0.65%, and moong pulse by 0.63%.
Sharp annual increases in essential commodities
On a year-on-year basis, onion prices recorded the highest increase, surging by 114.20%. LPG prices increased by 66.59%, while electricity charges rose by 58.59%.
Diesel prices were 44.50% higher than a year earlier, while petrol prices increased by 44.05%.
The PBS also reported a 32.65% annual increase in wheat flour prices and a 15.55% rise in chilli powder prices.
Meanwhile, some commodities became significantly cheaper compared with the same period last year. Tomato prices fell by 45.52% and potato prices by 39.54%. Sugar prices declined by 21.95%, eggs by 17.47%, and powdered salt by 14.81%.
