LAHORE MIRROR — Pakistan has lodged a strong protest over what it described as the provocative and irresponsible actions of the Indian Navy vessel INS Kolkata in Pakistan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Foreign Office said on Wednesday.
Foreign Office spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan said the Indian naval vessel had engaged in provocative activities in Pakistan’s maritime zone, describing them as a violation of the 1991 bilateral agreement governing maritime activities between the two countries.
According to the spokesperson, the Pakistan Navy has been conducting Sea Spark-26 exercises in Pakistan’s EEZ since September 1. Indian naval vessels and helicopters had repeatedly attempted to enter the area where the exercises were being conducted, he said.
The Foreign Office said INS Kolkata had carried out dangerous and provocative manoeuvres close to Pakistani naval vessels. It said the Indian vessel’s actions could not be treated as routine deployment and amounted to a violation of the 1991 agreement.

Despite repeated warnings, the spokesperson said, the Indian vessel continued its manoeuvres. On September 15, INS Kolkata allegedly made a dangerous turn and came into contact with Pakistan Navy vessel PNS Hunain.
He said PNS Hunain attempted to avoid the collision, but the two vessels nevertheless came into contact. Following the incident, INS Kolkata increased its speed and left the area, he added.
The spokesperson described the incident as highly provocative and said it could have triggered a serious crisis. He credited the Pakistan Navy’s professional and responsible conduct with preventing the situation from escalating further.
Pakistan viewed the alleged violations by the Indian Navy with serious concern, he said, accusing India of attempting to distort facts and escalate the matter diplomatically.
“Indian actions reflect a deliberate attempt to undermine regional peace,” the spokesperson said, urging New Delhi to respect bilateral agreements and adhere to responsible conduct.
He warned that Pakistan’s current level of restraint should not be taken for granted in the face of any future Indian provocation.
Indian diplomat summoned
Sajjad Haider Khan said the Indian Chargé d’Affaires was summoned to the Foreign Office, where Pakistan lodged a strong protest over the alleged provocative actions by the Indian Navy.
Pakistan rejected the Indian action and demanded that New Delhi strictly comply with international law and bilateral agreements, he said.
The spokesperson added that Pakistan’s High Commission in New Delhi would also convey a formal protest to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
Pakistan also called on the international community to take notice of what it described as India’s provocative policy, he said.
