LAHORE MIRROR — A car is being stolen every four minutes in the United Kingdom (UK), while only three per cent of offenders are charged, according to figures cited in an investigative report highlighting the growing scale of vehicle theft.
Official figures show that car thefts in England and Wales have risen by almost 50 per cent compared with a decade ago.
The report said police forces were struggling with shortages of staff and resources, hampering efforts to tackle the crime. Stolen vehicles are reportedly shipped overseas to countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Jamaica.
In other cases, stolen cars are dismantled, with their parts removed and sold separately.
The rise in vehicle thefts has also contributed to higher car insurance premiums, increasing the financial burden on motorists.
